Blank Check

Mon, January 29, 2007

Now, I am not one to really talk about my dreams, or write about them on the web but this one was just too cool.

My husband and I were driving somewhere when we noticed huge explosions over the water. Wherever we were, it was a large city next to the ocean. In the ocean were tons of navy boats. We concluded that there must have been some kind of military land and sea show going on.

As things continued we were on the street of the city watching (you know how you magically change locations in dreams). The streets were filled with people just like us watching the show. A aircraft carrier suddenly shot off lots of explosives, from within the clouds of fire and smoke hot air balloons rose into the sky. Each explosion produced 6 hot air balloons, with people riding inside of them. When they got over the city they started throwing things down to the people. One right above us dropped a bowl of money.

At this point I think it was a bit of a lucid dream because sadly I knew I would never just be handed a bowl of money. Anyway, inside the bowl were bills, bits of paper, checks etc. Someone in the crowd suggested that I share the bowl with everyone so I took a few things then passed it on. I looked at what I had, two $1 bills, and a check. I looked closer at the check, the name of the account holder was cut off, the memo line said “Account balance $63,868.00″ and the amount line was blank.

I was astonished. A blank check. We could be holding 63 thousand dollars. My first thought was of course to fill it out for the exact account amount. It’s funny because if someone gave us that much cash, we would definitely use it all without question. The idea of a blank check really give you a choice. I didn’t know if we should use it at all, or give it to charity, or use a portion. I thought of all the great and useful things we could do with that money. I also thought of how many people could use it so much more than we could. What about the benefactor? What if that is his/her life savings? What about a billionaire who would hardly notice it was gone? In any case, I knew that it was going to be a long hard decision to make.

What would you do?

Some Thing Wrong

Tue, January 16, 2007

Not exactly sure where these stats came from, some study apparently, but it makes me thirsty.

Some thing wrong
1. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated.
2. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is
often mistaken for hunger.
3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one’s metabolism as much as 3%.
4. One glass of water shuts down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the
dieters studied in a U-Washington study.
5. Lack of water is the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.
6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could
significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.
7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with
basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen.
8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus
it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likely to
develop bladder cancer.

Google Word of the Day

Mon, January 15, 2007

Yesterday’s word of the day through Google home pages was “prohibitionist”. Somehow I wonder if this is a valid statement; using the word in a relevant sentence.

“She was a tireless prohibitionist who raided saloons and destroyed bottles of liquor with a hatchet.”

The thing that I question most about this is the visualization of a woman during the time of prohibition (1920 - 1933) walking around with a hatchet and whacking things she doesn’t agree with, namely alcoholic beverages. Do you think this is plausible? I for one would like to see historical proof of this kind of behavior.

The Birds

Mon, January 15, 2007

Everyday during the winter months I see these masses of birds outside the window. There are updrafts all over the area just outside that the birds love. I can’t get over how many hawks there are here. Some days, like yesterday, there are hundreds just flying and riding the wind in circles above. This video shows a group of birds that got pretty close to the house, you don’t really see the sheer enormity of all the birds, but it is fun to watch them just floating on air. The clip in the end of the movie was done with auto focus, so I apologize for the weird bit of zooming in/out.

I went into these thinking they would be funny. They were instead all quite sad. An interesting read though, glad I’m not one of them. Happy late (it was yesterday) National Break Up Day!

Stories From Splitsville — Yahoo! Personals
When it comes to matters of the heart, each one of us has a story to tell. Sometimes it ends with a “Happily ever after.” All too often, however, it can end with an abrupt and out-of-the-blue “The end.” Recently we asked members of Yahoo! Personals to share their own personal stories of how the fat lady sung. And, boy, did they have some whoppers to tell.
